Bin lorries stop automatically if driver loses control

West Dunbartonshire Council becomes first to fit safety devices to fleet of bin lorries.

New safety technology will automatically stop bin lorries if the driver loses control.

West Dunbartonshire Council is the first local authority in the UK to introduce the innovative equipment across its fleet of  bin lorries.

It comes five years after the bin lorry crash in Glasgow, which saw six killed when the driver blacked out.

The system allows crew members or other passengers to safely slow down and stop the vehicle in an emergency situation.

When the system is activated, it limits revs from the accelerator pedal and uses braking pulses to bring the vehicle to a halt in seconds.

The method means the vehicle won’t swerve, skid or lock up, ensuring safety for other road users and pedestrians.
