Yousaf releases plans for citizenship in an independent Scotland

The proposals are similar to the Irish model, those born outside Scotland would be automatically eligible for citizenship if they had a Scottish parent

The First Minister has unveiled plans for citizenship and passports if Scotland becomes an independent country.

Humza Yousaf said the proposals would be inclusive and closely follow the Irish model, meaning someone outside Scotland could become a citizen if they had a Scottish parent.

But opposition MSPs have branded the paper, which is the fifth in a series on independence, as a waste of taxpayers’ money and an SNP vanity project.
