Would raising legal age of marriage from 16 to 18 help fight forced marriage?

The consultation looking at the legal age to marry in Scotland is about to come to an end.

A survivor of forced marriage has told STV News that proposals to raise the marriage age from 16 to 18 will make little difference in protecting young women and girls.

A public consultation looking at the legal aid of marriage in Scotland, along with a wider package of reforms to family law, comes to an end on Tuesday.

Forced marriage can often involve violence, threats or coercion, and is already a criminal offence.

The UK government’s Forced Marriage Unit gave advice to a possible forced marriage in 240 cases last year, almost half of which were linked to Pakistan.
