Women’s mental health prison places must be priority, says inspector

Inspectors say HMP Stirling is leading the way when it comes to managing women in custody.

The Chief Inspector of Prisons says the Scottish Government must prioritise how it can provide more high security places for women with severe mental health issues.

The recommendation was included in a report praising Scotland’s newest female prison for managing the complex challenges of those in its custody.

But, concerns have been raised following the first year of Stirling Prison of security issues, a major design flaw and whether the multi-million pound jail is being used fully due to the churn of remand prisoners.
