Volunteers help those buried in nameless graves be remembered

Name plaques have been installed and the neglected cemetery has become a site for family members to visit their ancestors

Patients at a Victorian psychiatric hospital who were buried in nameless grave plots are finally being remembered thanks to a small group of volunteers in Lanarkshire.

Their work to restore the old “paupers’ graveyard” in Hartwood — where people were interred in groups of 2 and 3 from 1895 until 1952 — has seen them named ‘Scotland Project of the Year’ by the National Lottery.
