After nearly three centuries, an unexploded shell has surfaced on Culloden battlefield.
A volunteer detectorist recently discovered the mortar, which was thought to be used by government troops in the 1746 battle against forces loyal to Bonnie Prince Charlie.
After its safe retrieval, the 16-pound shell has taken pride of place at the visitor centre, where it’s been added to exhibits in time for this week’s 280th anniversary of the famous battle.
