Trial of mum accused of murdering three-week-old daughter begins

Thea's grandmother Laura Wilson was the first witness to be called in the case today/yesterday.

The trial of a Greenock woman accused of murdering her three-week-old baby daughter began on Wednesday.

Thea Wilson was born June 25, 2023, and died just three weeks later in hospital, on July 14. Nicole Blain, 30, is accused of repeatedly shaking her baby and inflicting blunt force trauma by means unknown.

Thea’s Grandmother, Laura Wilson, 59, was the first witness to be called in the trial, and told the jury Blain claimed she had found the infant on the floor, with a bump on her head, and that she later alleged a young child “had done it”.

Alan Wilson, 59, also gave evidence on Wednesday, and told of a call he took from Blain: “I could hear screaming. I had never heard anything like it.

“It was piercing and extremely loud. I thought it was an older child doing it, but then I realised it was the baby who was screaming.”

Blain denies murder; the trial continues on Thursday.
