System to heat homes using abandoned mines trialled in Lothian

Most disused coal mines are flooded with water making them ideal for heat pumps

A first of its kind system is being trialled in Edinburgh and the Lothians to see if derelict mines can be used to warm our homes.

If successful, It could provide a global blueprint for converting abandoned and flooded coal mine networks into heat storage.
