Sunak faces calls to return money after donors ‘racist’ comments

There are real concerns in Westminster about the tone of the election campaign to come

Rishi Sunak is facing calls from within his own party to hand back a £10 million donation, after the Prime Minister admitted comments by a businessman about the UK’s first black woman MP were racist.

These reported comments by the Tories’ biggest donor have caused revulsion on all sides, and there was anger yesterday when Number 10 wouldn’t even say whether the Prime Minister thought they were racist.

Now he has, and the Scottish Tories say the donation should be reviewed.

All this, amid growing concern about extreme views and hateful language in British politics.

What this does mean, is that the issue of extreme rhetoric and extreme views in politics will rise further up the agenda ahead of the election.

It’s completely dominated in the week after the Budget – on Monday the former Conservative MP Lee Anderson, who was thrown out of the party for accusing Labour of being controlled by Islamists, defected to the right-wing Reform Party, and doubled down on his views.
