Sunak faces backbench opposition to new oil licences

One Conservative MP has called the proposed legislation 'smoke and mirrors'

Just days into a New Year and already the Prime Minister is facing opposition from some of his backbenchers – this time on the future of oil and gas in the North Sea.

The UK Government proposes that licences for drilling in the North Sea should be granted annually claiming the move would provide more energy security.

But critics have warned the new licences would do little to help with energy bills or tackle climate change.
