Sturgeon to step down as MSP at next Holyrood election

She entered the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and was the country's longest serving First Minister.

Nicola Sturgeon says she’s stepping down as an MSP next year and won’t stand for re-election in Glasgow Southside.

Sturgeon has been at Holyrood since 1999, when the Scottish Parliament was founded.

She was First Minister for longer than anyone else.

She says the “time is right to open a new chapter” in her life, after being embroiled in a police inquiry into SNP finances and her separation from her husband.
