SNP politician Winnie Ewing dies at age of 93

STV News now looks back on Mrs Ewing's contribution to Scottish politics

The iconic SNP politician, Winnie Ewing – credited as kick-starting the modern independence movement – has died at the age of 93.

She coined the phrase “Stop the World – Scotland wants to get on” – when she won the Hamilton by-election in 1967.

She served as an MP at Westminster, MSP at Holyrood — and — in Brussels – as an MEP, where she was known as “Madame Ecosse”.
