Shetland’s Up Helly Aa takes place with women for first time

The annual fire festival was postponed for the past three years due to the pandemic

Celebrations are underway in Shetland for Up Helly Aa, with women and girls taking part for the first time in Lerwick.

More than 20 girls are taking part in the Junior galley burning this evening.

Rules were changed last year to allow women in the processions.
