Scottish Government sets out council tax rate rise plan

It would generate an estimated £170 million a year for local services

The Scottish Government has set out plans for sweeping hikes to council tax.

If approved, it would mean people living in higher bands having to pay hundreds of pounds more per year.

More than a quarter of properties, 28%, are estimated to be impacted by the proposal.

The government says the move would make council tax “fairer and more progressive” – but critics say the whole system needs an overhaul.
