The Government says it remains committed to enhancing marine protection

It is a policy that sparked fierce opposition from coastal communities. Now the Scottish Government has scrapped its plans to ban fishing in 10% of waters around Scotland’s coast.

The Net Zero Secretary says plans to introduce Highly Protected Marine Areas by 2026 will no longer go ahead.

The fishing industry has welcomed the decision but warned against the same policy being brought in by the back door.
