Scottish Government scraps headline climate targets

Even though the targets are legally binding, they have been missed for eight out of twelve years.

The Scottish Government was leading the world in tackling the climate crisis, but it has scrapped its flagship target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030 after accepting that it is now “out of reach”.

The move has been branded the worst environmental decision in Holyrood’s history – and climate campaigners say the announcement is “bitterly disappointing”.

But the Scottish Government insists the target to reach net zero by 2045 – five years earlier than the UK – remains.
