Spinal Muscular Atrophy – or SMA as it’s commonly known – is a genetic, muscle-wasting disease which presents in childhood.
A decade ago, there was no effective way to detect or treat it. But since 2018, there have been a series of medical breakthroughs.
Next month, Scotland will become the first country in the UK to trial a screening programme to detect the condition from birth.
