Scotland reaches record population of 5.4 million people

The increase is down to migration. The data also shows we are getting older, 1 in 5 of us is aged 65 or over

More people are living in Scotland than ever before. Results from the latest census show the population has risen to more than 5.4 million.

The National Records of Scotland insists the figures represent the whole of the country despite a smaller response rate than previous years.
