Scotland alcohol deaths hit highest for 14 years

Across the country 1,276 people died from drinking last year, that's 31 more than the previous year

The grim reality of Scotland’s relationship with alcohol is being laid bare once again.

It is the highest number of deaths since 2008.

It means more people are dying from alcohol than illegal drugs in Scotland. And people living in our most deprived areas are four times more likely to die as a result of Alcohol addiction.

The Scottish Government minister responsible for Drug and Alcohol policy says she will do “all she can to reduce alcohol related harm” but accepts more needs to be done.
