Work has begun on an ambitious project to restore almost 2,500 acres of rare and threatened habitat near Loch Ness, which has been billed as Britain’s largest rewilding programme.
Charities, landowners and businesses have united to repair peatland which spans over three neighbouring estates and is among the world’s rarest habitats.
Affric Highlands has an ambition for restoring almost 500,000 acres, with funding coming from taxpayers and various other sources, including food and drink companies.
Restoration is complete at Dundreggan estate, which is owned by the Trees for Life charity, and on the privately owned Guisachan estate, with a second phase of work due at Corrimony Farm.
