Public consultation opens on rape sentencing guidelines

Campaigners have welcomed the consultation but have raised concerns.

How long a sentence should be handed down to convicted rapists?

The Scottish Sentencing Council – the body which provides guidelines for criminal penalties in the courts – is asking the public for their views.

It has published a draft on what judges should take into consideration when sentencing, and hopes to make the process more transparent and consistent.

One rape survivor has told STV News she was “devastated” to learn her attacker could be released from jail, just a few years after being convicted.
