The head of Scotland’s prison service is warning it’s at a crisis point – with the population behind bars now above the level that led to early release measures to relieve pressure across the system.
Ten prisons are operating at red risk status – which means they are struggling to meet demands due to overcrowding.
Those managing a population of more than 8,300 prisoners say safety is being compromised.
