Prisoners serving under four years to be released early

The change has been announced to ease jail overcrowding.

Under new Scottish Government plans, prisoners jailed for less than four years will be released earlier after serving 40% of their sentence.

Further changes to the rules for long-term prisoners are still being considered, but the justice secretary told MSPs there are currently significant practical difficulties.

Victims groups welcome this pause and say public safety must not be sacrificed.
