Police looking at alternative support for mental health call outs

More than 100,000 calls a year to police Scotland involve mental health related incidents

Every day across Scotland, the police go to hundreds of calls to incidents involving mental health, where there are concerns for someone’s safety. In the vast majority of them, no crime has been committed.

Now the force is looking at better ways to deal with such cases.

It believes that could provide more appropriate help for people in crisis – and free up the equivalent of 500 new officers.
