Peter Murrell admits embezzling more than £400,000 from SNP party funds

The SNP’s former chief executive and Nicola Sturgeon’s estranged husband pled guilty to embezzling cash from party funds over 12 years.

The SNP’s former chief executive, Peter Murrell, has admitted to embezzling more than £400,000 from the party, after pleading guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh on Monday.

Police Scotland received its first complaint in March 2021 when the force launched an investigation code-named Operation Branchform.

Following the resignation of Nicola Sturgeon in February 2023, the investigation unfolded rapidly and police raided the couple’s home and also searched the SNP’s Edinburgh headquarters.

Peter Murrell at that time was released without charge, but was re-arrested in April 2024.
