Operations restart after ‘unknown substance’ found on surgical instruments

Almost 1,500 procedures have been delayed.

NHS Grampian says it’s no longer postponing operations after its main decontamination unit was forced to close in October.

An “unknown substance” was found on surgical instruments being cleaned at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

The health board say theatres are now at 90% capacity as it continues to investigate the substance.

Almost 1,500 procedures have been delayed.
