Only 3.4% of storm overflows monitored for sewage discharge

There were more than 14,000 sewage discharges into the water in Scotland last year

Scotland is lagging significantly behind England and Wales when it comes to monitoring sewage being discharged into our seas.

Just 3.4% of storm overflows are observed, according to new research.

The Marine Conservation Society says untreated sewage – which is permitted to be released during heavy rainfall to prevent flooding – is polluting shores and interfering with the “delicate balance” of oceans.
