One in three Scots attending A&E ‘could be treated elsewhere’

Medics are urging people to avoid hospitals if possible due to winter pressure.

As winter pressure on the NHS begins to bite, A&E waiting times across the country have reached their worst levels since January.

As overstretched hospitals feel the pressure, health chiefs are urging people to avoid going to accident and emergency, unless they are seriously ill.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde revealed two in three people who turned up at its emergency departments did not need to be there.

That’s nearly 100 people attending on a daily basis that medics believe could be treated elsewhere.
