New highest rate of tax unveiled in Scottish budget

Spending increases in welfare and the NHS were also announced

Higher earners in Scotland will pay more in tax from next year. The Deputy First Minister Shona Robison said those with the “broadest shoulders” should pay more.

As she set out the Scottish Government’s tax and spending plans, she announced a 1% increase to the highest rate. It means the better paid will be paying thousands more in tax than those in England.

However, Ms Robison told the Scottish Parliament 51% of tax payers in Scotland will still pay less than if they were in the rest of the UK.
