A study by the University of Edinburgh has found that more access to advanced therapies for inflammatory bowel disease has dramatically decreased the number of patients needing to have surgery.
More than 300,000 people in the UK live with ulcerative colitis, a long-term condition where the colon and rectum become inflamed.
The study collated data over twenty years from people across the Lothian region as and experts say the findings could encourage other health boards to make use of available advanced therapies.
