Memorial garden opens commemorating Fife’s worst fishing disaster

Almost 40 men from St Monans and Cellardyke died in a storm off the Anglian coast in 1875.

A memorial garden has been opened in Fife to mark 150 years since the region’s worst ever fishing disaster.

Almost 40 men from St Monans and Cellardyke died in a storm off the Anglian coast in 1875, tearing the close-knit fishing communities of the East Neuk apart.

Until now, the only permanent memorial was hundreds of miles to the south in Norfolk.
