Lewis chessmen go on display at the National Museum

Many of the pieces are familiar to those who play the game today.

The iconic Lewis chessmen have been redisplayed at the National Museum of Scotland, allowing visitors to see the intricate carvings from all angles for the very first time.

The pieces, thought to have been made in Norway around 1200, were part of a large hoard discovered in the early 19th century.
