John Swinney elected as seventh First Minister of Scotland

He replaces Humza Yousaf who formally stepped down this morning.

John Swinney has been elected the new First Minister of Scotland, the third in little over a year, and the seventh in the history of the Scottish Parliament.

Swinney said it was an “extraordinary privilege” to fill the role after 25 years in the Parliament.

He said he offered himself as the First Minister to everyone in Scotland.

He added that, as a minority Government, he would need to work with other parties to make things happen and he acknowledged the Parliament is intensely polarised.
