Jo Farrell appointed as new head of Police Scotland

She will be the first ever female chief constable of the force

The Justice Secretary has described Police Scotland’s appointment of its first-ever female chief constable as an opportunity for change.

Jo Farrell, from Durham Constabulary, will succeed Sir Iain Livingstone, who is stepping down this August after admitting last month that Scotland’s police force is institutionally racist and sexist.

Jo Farrell called her new role one of the most challenging in UK policing – but those campaigning to change the force’s culture say she can be a role model for other women in the police.
