Hundreds of prisoners released early to tackle overcrowding

Prisoners who have committed the most serious crimes like murder or sexual offences will not be released early.

Prisoners from Scotland’s overcrowded jails are being released early in an attempt to lessen the pressure on the system.

The first of 390 inmates who have served 40% of a four-year sentence walked out of prison gates across the country on Tuesday.

It’s part of a phase of releases happening over the course of six weeks.

It won’t include those who’ve committed the most serious crimes like murder or sexual offences.

Victim support campaigners claim the move is traumatising and are worried about their safety.
