Holyrood backs Swinney on second independence referendum

Swinney tabled a motion calling on the UK Government to make a Section 30 order

MSPs are expected to back a call for Westminster to hand over powers to allow a second independence referendum.

The First Minister wants Westminster to make a Section 30 order and grant the Scottish Parliament the authority to permit the vote to take place.

Successive UK governments have dismissed repeated calls from SNP first ministers for a second referendum, with Sir Keir Starmer the latest Prime Minister to rebuff such demands.

The vote went down party lines with a majority calling on Westminster to pass the powers to Holyrood for another independence referendum.
