HMP Kilmarnock passes into public ownership after 25 years

Many believe a rethink of the entire prison estate is essential to respond to ongoing challenges

It opened 25 years ago as Scotland’s first private prison.

Now at a time when our jails are overcrowded and under pressure, HMP Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, has passed into public ownership.

Its Governor has praised the efforts of those involved in the transition earlier this month, but warns his prison is already running over capacity.

Craig Thomson says Kilmarnock, like the rest of the estate, faces a difficult balancing act, managing an increasing population with complex needs.
