Gender Recognition Reform bill debate enters second day

A 3 hour session lasted 8 hours yesterday, and is expected to continue until midnight today

After debates stretched beyond midnight last night and protesters interrupted from the public gallery, MSPs are continuing a marathon vote on amendments to the controversial Gender Recognition Reform Bill.

It aims to streamline and de-medicalise how trans people can legally change their gender, but its come under fierce criticism from some women’s groups who say it threatens single sex spaces.

The bill is expected to pass, but in what could be the longest ever sitting at Holyrood, the big question is – when?

They were supposed to be voting on the final Bill right now – but they are a long way from that. And during that nothing much has really changed – the Government has not lost a vote although it has accepted some tweaks to tighten the legislation.

And as trans people wait to cheer this when it finally passes enhancing their human rights, several hundred women have been protesting outside claiming this will diminish their rights.
