As we come on air tonight MSPs are in the midst of a marathon debate on more than 150 amendments to the Gender Recognition Reform bill, it’s been one of the most controversial bills to ever go through the Scottish parliament.
Supporters say the reforms will make the process less demeaning, bureaucratic and medicalised. But critics fear it could pose a danger to women and girls, particularly around the provision of single sex spaces.
Today pro-trans campaigners were outside parliament, tonight and tomorrow campaigners concerned about women’s rights will be there.
The Scottish Government says this is about making it easier to get a Gender Recognition Certificate – you would no longer have to get a diagnosis from two doctors and wait two years.
Instead you would apply to the Registrar General, swear an oath and the administrative process would take three months.
But it has taken years to get to this stage and it has been a deeply divisive debate.
