Fear over spread of new super strength synthetic opioids

The number of suspected drug deaths in Scotland surged by 10% last year

There are fears Scotland is unprepared to track the spread of new super strength drugs, linked to at least 25 deaths in recent months.

15 synthetic opioids, including substances called nitazenes have now been banned by the UK Government.

Anyone involved in production or supply of these class A drugs could face life in prison; an unlimited fine, or both.

But some experts warn such a ban is fruitless and believe more drug checking services must be rapidly introduced.
