Fatal accident inquiry underway over deaths at HMP Polmont

The families say they want answers and accountability and an independent body to investigate prison deaths

A fatal accident inquiry has heard a 16-year-old who took his own life in Polmont Young Offenders Institution had been removed from suicide watch hours earlier.

William Lindsay had been remanded in custody due to a lack of beds in a secure unit, three days before he died in 2018.

Today a joint fatal accident inquiry into the teenager’s death and that of 21-year old Katie Allan got underway.

This inquiry will not be to apportion blame.
