Edinburgh becomes first city in Scotland to introduce tourist tax

Tourists in Edinburgh will have to pay 5% of the cost of their accommodation from July 24, 2026

From today, tourists staying in Edinburgh will have to pay a visitor levy of 5% of the overall stay, which will be applied to overnight accommodation bookings from July 24 next year.

Edinburgh Council says the tax will generate up to £50m per year for the city, but businesses say the rules on how to implement the levy are not clear enough.
