Drugs deaths in Scotland fall to five year low

Opiates such heroin and methadone, were involved in 8 in 10 fatalities, often in combination with other substances

The number of people dying from drugs in Scotland has fallen to a five year low although the death rate remains the highest in Europe.

That’s 279 fewer than the previous year. The Scottish Government says it doesn’t underestimate the scale of the challenge that remains.

While cities including Glasgow and Dundee have seen progress, there has been a sharp increase in deaths in Inverclyde.
