Doctors say they fear how they are going to cope this winter, as they link long waits in A&E departments with more than 800 deaths in Scotland.
The Royal College of Emergency Medicine has estimated there were 818 deaths last year connected to delays before admission to a ward.
That is a rise of a third compared to the previous year.
The Scottish Government says it is committed to delivering improved performance.
