Difficult birth may have caused Lewis pilot whale stranding

Over 50 whales died after following a female into shallow water.

A difficult pregnancy could be one of the reasons why a pod of pilot whales stranded in Lewis three years ago.

More than 50 mammals died after becoming stuck near Tolsta in July 2023.

It’s thought that one of the females was struggling to give birth, and the others followed her into shallow water.
