Deaths of youngers at Polmont could have been avoided, inquiry finds

The Scottish Prison Service, NHS Forth Valley and the Scottish Government have all apologised.

A solicitor has claimed that two young people were given a “death sentence” after being sent to Polmont young offender’s institution.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry has found the deaths of 21-year-old Katie Allan and 16-year-old William Brown, who both committed suicide in Polmont, could have been avoided if reasonable precautions had been taken.

A sheriff described a catalogue of systematic failures. Both Katie’s and William’s families are now demanding a change in the law to allow prisons to be prosecuted.
