Deaf woman calls for more awareness in healthcare

Sophia Cumming’s son had to interpret for a doctor delivering her father's cancer diagnosis

A woman, whose teenage son was forced to interpret for a GP while he explained her father’s cancer diagnosis, is calling for health professionals to be more aware of the needs of deaf people.

Sophia Cumming’s dad became unwell in early 2020.

She says she felt invisible when the doctor showed up for the home visit without a sign language interpreter.
