Care providers hiring from overseas to avoid agency costs

Unable to find staff domestically, many providers have had no choice but look further afield

Faced with thousands of vacancies and a growing ageing population, there are more grim warnings from social care providers tonight that the system is heading towards collapse.

As the Social Care minister launches a series of conversations around how a new national care service would work, faith leaders say an immediate pay uplift is needed as care staff now earn more than 20% less than their NHS counterparts.

Many care providers are now being forced to recruit staff from places like India and Sri Lanka to plug the gaps, and avoid being “held to ransom” by agencies.
