Cancer centre plans in limbo after government spending freeze

NHS Lothian say demand for cancer services has significantly outgrown existing facilities

The vision is to build a new world class specialist centre to transform cancer services across the Lothians and beyond.

It’s a bold ambition for Edinburgh’s Western General hospital that comes with a £1bn price tag and plans are now on hold due to a Scottish Government spending freeze.

On the existing site, the health board say it’s modernising where it can and has refurbished two units to cope with an increasing number of patients.

A leading cancer charity fears without major investment, the current set-up will struggle to meet future needs.
