Campaigners say they hope the tide is now turning towards an official government apology for all those affected by forced adoption practices. A new report has echoed their calls to right the wrongs experienced by unmarried mothers between the 1950s and 70s.
The findings of the Joint Committee on Human Rights places “ultimate responsibility” with governments and says thousands were subjected to cruelty and abuse and railroaded into unwanted adoptions. Those who made submissions to the inquiry from Scotland want wider reforms to heal decades of pain.
